Welcome to the website of Paul Cutler. I am a freelance consultant, trainer and activist working to help individuals, organisations and communities become stronger and more effective so they can make change happen. Site last updated 06/11/2008.

I work in the fields of social and community development covering issues such as service user and stakeholder involvement, grassroots participation and policy development, community development, social work, health care, adult and children's services.

My role is:

  • Helping people to do more and to communicate effectively
  • Supporting the grassroots to become well organised and powerful
  • Assisting people to rethink what they can do to make positive change happen
  • Building trust and shared values
  • Working alongside people to reflect, learn and grow

I achieve this by:

  • Working with people to build their skills, knowledge, confidence, experience and networks
  • Supporting people to develop their voice to lead change, inspire others and enjoy their achievements
  • Enabling people to use tools and techniques successfully
  • Recognising the service user as the key expert in the real world
  • Promoting local perspectives at the core of development and policy
  • Supporting people on their journey as they take action

I am motivated by a set of principles and values including empowerment, involvement, leadership, participation and public action. My work is about turning these abstract concepts and aspirations into a form of reality that can be recognised and valued in the local community.

I have over 19 years experience working in social and community development with both children and adults. I have a Masters Degree in Development Management and a Bachelors Degree in Sociology. I am also a registered social worker with the General Social Care Council and have been C.Q.S.W. qualified since 1992.

My work is with a variety of community organisations including voluntary sector groups, NHS Trusts, university departments, social services and international non-governmental organisations. I particularly enjoy working with grassroots user and family groups and local stakeholders.

I currently work for the following organisations:

  • Bexley NHS Care Trust
  • The National Children's Bureau
  • The Centre for Public Scrutiny
  • Participation Works
  • Ormiston Children & Families Trust
  • The University of Greenwich
  • Hammersmith Refugee Advice and Support Centre
